A Look at Where the Volkswagen Jetta Has Been And Where It's Going

When a car is as loved as the Volkswagen Jetta, it often sticks around for decades, as our 2025 Volkswagen Jetta generations list illustrates. This four-door sedan was initially introduced to the U.S. in 1979 for the 1980 model year, and while it has been updated several times over the proceeding decades, it retains its core principles - offering drivers convenience, comfort, and smooth handling. If you're as fascinated by car history as our team at Berge Volkswagen, we'd love to talk to you about this model's seven generations. We go over these briefly here.

Volkswagen Jetta 1st Generation

Volkswagen automakers conceived of the four-seat Jetta, known as Mk1, because they were looking to create something reminiscent of the Golf but with a trunk. Originally, this model offered 76 horsepower and had an available automatic transmission, providing a few more touches of luxury than many other sedans on the market while still being practical. It proceeded to get some boosts to its horsepower over the intervening years.

1984: Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Given the success of the Jetta model, an expansion to the lineup was made that brought the first Volkswagen Jetta GLI into the world. This 90-horsepower model offered a sporty alternative to the Volkswagen Jetta but also to competitors from other automakers.

Volkswagen Jetta 2nd Generation

When Mk2 launched in 1985, it had 100 horsepower and the ability to seat up to five people, evolving from a subcompact to a compact two- or four-door vehicle. Along with its greater passenger volume, this iteration also had more trunk space and began handily outpacing the sales of the traditional Volkswagen Golf in America. Production delays affected the 1992 Volkswagen Golf so that it appeared in 1993. However, this model very closely resembled the 1991 model in design.

Volkwagen Jetta 3rd Generation

The true 1993 Volkswagen Jetta, the Mk3, roared onto the scene with over 170 horsepower from its muscular V-6. The luxury of this vehicle also stepped up a notch. GLX and Wolfsburg trims offered well-appointed cabins in order to match the newly refined exterior design.

Volkswagen Jetta 4th Generation

The 2020 model year marked a stark change for this vehicle. While its origins were in the Volkswagen Golf, this version was heavily influenced by the Volkswagen Passat, which was notably larger than the Golf. It also resembled the Passat more in its design. The other, perhaps most significant, change was the introduction of a wagon variant with a liftback-style cargo hold.

Volkswagen Jetta 5th Generation

This vehicle continued to move on to bigger and better things. The fifth generation debuted not only with greater passenger room but with new amenities, ranging from creature comforts - like dual-zone automatic climate control - to more advanced driver-support features. A 2.5-liter engine making 150 horsepower would be the standard for several years.

Volkswagen Jetta 6th Generation

Mk6 got ahead of the curve, offering drivers a hybrid powertrain for increased fuel efficiency. One of its trims, the Sport, also took influences from the Jetta GLI for those drivers who were interested in a lower rear suspension to reduce air resistance.

Volkswagen Jetta 7th Generation

Volkswagen Jetta 7th Generation

The 2019 model year marked the beginning of the current Volkswagen Jetta generation. Available luxuries ranged from the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit - a customizable digital display that showcased your fuel economy, the directions to your destination, phone apps, and dashboard gauges - to heated front seats. While this generation started with a 148-horsepower powertrain, a 2022 refresh brought in the 158-horsepower turbocharged engine option used today. The manual transmission was retired for this vehicle in 2023, remaining only on the Jetta GLI.

Versions of the Volkswagen Jetta from the seventh generation can often be found in our used Volkswagen Jetta inventory for those who might be interested in a manual transmission or the value of a pre-owned vehicle. Our selection might also potentially include certified pre-owned models, which are inspected and approved on over 100 points by our dealership staff. Ask our team about the features these models bring to the table, as well as their available warranty coverage.

2025 Volkswagen Jetta

The most recent version of the Volkswagen Jetta has a beautifully modern, almost hawkish front fascia with recently refreshed LED headlights. The back of this vehicle has also gotten an update with a lightbar spanning the distance between the taillights and a revamped trunk lid. It retains the spirited 158-horsepower engine with 184 pound-feet of torque that this sedan has been relying on for a while, earning an EPA-estimated 29/40/33 MPG (City/Highway/Combined).1 It also keeps its 8-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit but ups the previous standard infotainment system to 8 inches, too.

While all four of its trims - S, Sport, SE, and SEL - have unique features to offer, the Sport can add more excitement to your daily drives with 17-inch wheels, an XDS cross-differential system, stainless steel pedal caps, and black accents. It looks especially good with Kings Red Metallic, Monterey Blue Pearl, or Monument Gray exterior paint, although four more hues are available for this trim.

2025 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

As much as we love the standard Volkswagen Jetta, we also appreciate its slightly wilder younger sibling, which has done its own share of maturing since the 1980s. A sport sedan with 228 horsepower and either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic transmission, this vehicle treats fun as serious business. Its one and only trim - the Autobahn - has a multilink rear axle, Adaptive Chassis Control, VAQ limited-slip front differential lock, dynamic steering, and a dual exhaust. It also comes with amenities like heated and ventilated, leather-upholstered front seats and ambient interior lighting.

We don't know yet what the next generation of Volkswagen Jetta vehicles holds, but we anticipate one in the next few years. We also expect that future iterations of this vehicle will carry on the brand's commitment to fuel efficiency, intuitive technology, and nimble handling.
