2025 Volkswagen Jetta MPG Ratings by Configuration

Your Volkswagen Jetta MPG will vary depending on the trim and options you pick. They range from an EPA-estimated 29/39/33 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)1 to an EPA-estimated 29/40/33 MPG (City/Highway/Combined).2

For the 2025 model year, there are four core Jetta trims:

  • VW Jetta S: A value-packed base trim that takes style and substance further.
  • VW Jetta Sport: More sportiness, style, and desirable features for not much more money.
  • VW Jetta SE: A blend of luxury and technology upgrades that maintains the car's legendary value proposition.
  • VW Jetta SEL: From heated and ventilated leather seats to a premium sound system, this Jetta is top-of-the-line.

As discussed earlier, the Volkswagen Jetta MPG ratings vary from trim to trim. Although the city and combined specs remain the same across the lineup, the S gets 39 MPG (Highway),1 while the Sport, SE, and SEL get 40 MPG (Highway).2

There is also the Jetta GLI, which is a high-performance version of the Jetta sedan. Notably, the Jetta GLI offers an available six-speed manual transmission, but its automatic is of the dual-clutch variety – it blazes through its seven speeds like a bolt of lightning.

None of the Volkswagen Jetta MPG ratings, even those of the powerful Jetta GLI, are anything below what you could call "exceptional" for this class.

The manual Jetta GLI earns an EPA-estimated 26/36/30 MPG (City/Highway/Combined),3 and the automatic-transmission version delivers an EPA-estimated 25/35/29 MPG (City/Highway/Combined).4

How Volkswagen Jetta Fuel Tank Capacity Translates to Real-World Range

The Volkswagen Jetta gas tank size comes in at 13.2 gallons of fuel capacity. When we consider the hybrid-like Volkswagen Jetta MPG ratings, we begin to see how this sedan offers enough range to take on longer road trips with infrequent gas stops.

An exciting maximum combined range of approximately 436 miles5 awaits you on the Jetta with a full tank of gas. Using its highest highway rating, you could theoretically get 528 miles of highway range7 out of a Jetta Sport, SE, or SEL with a full tank of gas.

If we look at the Jetta GLI, we see a bit less range than the core Jetta sedans but a lot more than competing turbocharged automobiles can offer.

Manual models can go for 396 miles,6 while the dual-clutch automatic models get 383 miles8 on a full tank. With a maximum highway range of 475 miles,9 the Jetta GLI doesn't require much compromise to get a massive boost of performance thrills. Schedule a test drive today and experience it for yourself.

Remarkable Facts About the Volkswagen Jetta Engine & Specs

Most turbocharged engines require premium fuel to ensure they run efficiently and at their highest level of performance. Many drivers are willing to accept the trade-off because turbo engines offer enhanced horsepower and torque without losing too much efficiency. This is one of the most impressive selling points of the Jetta and Jetta GLI: Although they are both powered by turbo engines, neither requires premium fuel. You can fill up the tank with regular unleaded gasoline while still enjoying the full benefits of your turbocharged powertrain.

Volkswagen Jetta uses its turbocharged engine to deliver 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Because it is not motivated by a hybrid system, there's no bulky battery system to weigh it down and diminish the car's performance potential – the lower weight also leads to much more engaging, responsive, and agile handling as you take curvy roads.

And yet, the Volkswagen Jetta MPG ratings can reach hybrid-like levels in many scenarios. More impressive, still, the Jetta GLI delivers its great MPGs alongside 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque – and it only needs regular 87-octane gasoline to make that power. All Jetta variants, from the Jetta S to the Jetta GLI, use an efficient and advanced front-wheel-drive system. The Jetta Sport trim and Jetta GLI gain snappier handling with an XDS Cross-Differential System.

Some drivers still ask about the Volkswagen Jetta diesel MPG ratings. While the diesel models haven't been available at our Volkswagen dealer in Gilbert, AZ, for years, we'll note that the final year for them was 2015. That year saw the diesel Jetta deliver150 horsepower and up to an EPA-estimated 30/44/35 MPG (City/Highway/Combined).10 The current Jetta S is eight horsepower above the diesel Jetta and only two combined MPG below it.1

While you won't find a diesel or hybrid Jetta as you view all new VW models at Berge Volkswagen, you will find many or all of the configurations we've mentioned. Whether you want to jump into the upper-level Jetta trims and experience the highest Volkswagen Jetta MPG rating or take a look inside the SEL variant with all its luxury, we're happy to help.
